The homeowner desired an
accessible in-law suite with a private living
room allowing for her parents to move in and
enjoy a secluded retreat yet still be close to
the family.
The existing kitchen was located at the rear of
the home. In order to accommodate the additional
family members, the kitchen needed to be
enlarged and moved.
They wanted a design that included a larger
laundry room and a new garage. A wheelchair lift
was also necessary to accommodate the needs of
her parents.
The home’s septic system was sized for only four
bedrooms. Proper design was needed to minimize
project costs. To maintain the four bedroom
requirement, we combined two small bedrooms on
the second floor of the home to create one large
bedroom.
The original front of the house was
asymmetrical. The goal was to create a front
elevation that balanced the look of the home. We
overlapped the in-law suite with the body of the
house and built a new front porch that connected
to the existing front porch. By doing so, we
were able to minimize the asymmetrical look of
the home.
The new addition not only created new ample
space for the homeowner and her parents but also
added to the curb appeal of the home.
